Full-scale barrel section of CR929 composite fwd fuselage rolls out

Full-scale barrel section (15 m × 6 m) of CR929 composite fwd fuselage rolled out successfully on December 26th, 2018. This is another milestone of CR929 program following the unveiling of the mockup, marking an important step forward in the development of the composite structure of the CR929 program.

Mr. He Dongfeng, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC), Mr. Zhao Yuerang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of COMAC, Mr. Tan Wangeng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of COMAC, Mr. Zhao Jiufang, Member of Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Commission for Discipline Inspection of COMAC, Mr. Guo Bozhi, Member of Standing Committee of the Party Committee of COMAC, Vice President of COMAC, and General Manager of CR929 Program, and Mr. Zhou Xinmin, Member of Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of COMAC, attended the roll-out ceremony.

Mr. Guo Bozhi pointed out that the roll-out of the composite fuselage barrel section is the result achieved by the lead of the design unit as well as the advantages and concerted cooperation of each participating unit through the integrated research and development of design, material, process, manufacturing and verification after overcoming various difficulties. As for the next phase of work, Mr. Guo Bozhi emphasized that first, we should make a summary to systematically summarize data, experience, methods and procedures, and solidify them into the company's system process, standard specification and manual; second, we should do a good job in application, aim at the needs of model development, do a solid job in test and verification, and accelerate the improvement of technology maturity.

The composite fuselage barrel section rolled out this time has a length of about 15 m and a diameter of about 6 m. The circumferential panel is composed of four pieces spliced together by longitudinal joint; the largest single piece of panel has a length of about 15 m and an arc length of about 6 m; and the maximum frame has an arc length of about 6 m. The fuselage section is composed of panels, frames, stringers, cabin and cargo jambs, passenger viewing windows, cabin and cargo floors, etc., and the parts such as panels and frames has large dimension and high integration degree. This is the first time in China to adopt the concept of full composite material design to carry out the research and development of the fuselage section of widebody aircraft. On the basis of the key technologies for the research and development of parts and components such as integrated panels, the technologies for the transportation, assembly and process handling of large components have been practiced, and the maturity of the technologies for the research and development of composite fuselage has been further improved.

Since 2014, COMAC has organized Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute (SADRI), Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (SAMC) and Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI) to establish joint research teams together with AVIC Composite Corporation Ltd. and AVIC Aircraft Strength Research Institute to systematically carry out the research and development of large-scale main bearing composite structural components of fuselage in accordance with international standards and the building block type development plan. The roll-out of the full-scale barrel section has broken through the technical problems of full-scale stringer manufacturing, panel automatic filament laying and assembly, etc., and provided an engineering inspection for the transportation scheme of large-scale panels, realizing an important breakthrough in the design and manufacturing capacity of large-scale main bearing composite parts and components of fuselage in China. Meanwhile, the roll-out of the full-scale barrel section of the composite fwd fuselage has also provided important technical support for the preliminary design of composite fuselage structure of CR929 aircraft.
