The 2nd COMAC International Science and Technology Innovation Week closed

Opening a new chapter for cooperation between university and industry in science and technology innovation

The 2nd COMAC International Science and Technology Innovation Week which lasted for five days was closed on September 14th, 2018, with 57 technology seminars and 15 matchmaking meetings held, 3 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and agreements on cooperation between university and industry signed, and 13 cooperation intentions reached centering on five major areas. Experts and scholars from different countries and in different fields focused on the theme of "exchanging basic subjects, exploring cutting-edge technology, solving problems and promoting innovation cooperation", gathered wisdom to make discussions, communication and collision, achieved fruitful results, explored a new mode of international cooperation between university and industry, and opened a new chapter for the in-depth cooperation among Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC), Tsinghua University and Imperial College London.

Mr. Liu Linzong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of COMAC, Mr. Xue Qikun, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Mr. Simon Hepworth, Director of Enterprise at Imperial College London, and Mr. Lin Jianguo and Mr. Spencer Sherwin, Fellows of The Royal Academy of Engineering and Professors of Imperial College London, attended the closing ceremony.

Mr. Liu Linzong said in his closing speech that the Science and Technology Innovation Week is a gathering of experts and talents, a gathering for science and technology innovation, and a very important inspiration to the scientific research and management personnel of COMAC. First, the talent team of COMAC must have a more solid understanding of the technology, and only theoretically and fundamentally mastering the technology can make the pace of the trunk liner career steadier. Second, the company would further develop and innovate; while paying attention to the current work, the company would actively invest in innovative, exploratory and forward-looking research to make solid preparations for the future. Third, the company would sincerely make friends with experts and talents from all over the world, join hands with global experts, gather world wisdom, communicate with the world more fully and efficiently, and make joint efforts to build a life community of commercial aircraft product innovation.

Mr. Xue Qikun expressed that Tsinghua University and COMAC would comprehensively implement the spirits of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), join hands with top universities and scientific research institutions in the field of international science and technology innovation, expand the area of cooperation between university and industry in scientific research, and build an open and win-win science and technology innovation mode; and would further broaden the international vision in the development of China's civil aviation industry, focus on the force of research teams at home and abroad, give full play to the role of the Science and Technology Innovation Week as a bridge and a bond to drive related disciplines to develop innovative thinking, and make greater contributions to the trunk liner career.

Mr. Simon Hepworth expressed that COMAC, as a young and innovative company, had impressed the team of Imperial College London during the Science and Technology Innovation Week. Imperial College London was honored to exchange ideas and discuss innovative technologies with COMAC and Tsinghua University, and hoped that the Science and Technology Innovation Week could make the three sides related more closely and cooperate more deeply in order to make further contribution to the aircraft design in the future.

At the closing ceremony, the head of Science and Technology Quality Department of COMAC reported the technology cooperation intentions and discussion results made during the Science and Technology Innovation Week. COMAC signed a MOU on Deepening Cooperation and MOUs on Building Joint Establishment and Scientific & Technological Cooperation respectively with Tsinghua University and Imperial College London. The preparatory work for the 3rd COMAC International Science and Technology Innovation Week was fully opened with relevant head of Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI) handed over the flag to the head of Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (SAMC).

During the Science and Technology Innovation Week, experts and scholars focused on "Intelligent Flight" and developed extensive exchanges in five fields such as lightweight structure, big data and artificial intelligence, virtual simulation and test, automation and intelligent manufacturing, and industrial design. COMAC has made a deep discussion on potential cooperation programs and reached broad consensus on cooperation form, cooperation content, cooperation organization and management, etc. with Tsinghua University and Imperial College London, and 13 cooperation intentions on scientific research programs have been finally reached.
