The 2nd COMAC International Science Technology and Innovation Week opened in Beijing

The opening ceremony of the 2nd COMAC International Science Technology and Innovation Week was held at Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI) of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) on September 10th, 2018. The COMAC International Science Technology and Innovation Week was jointly hosted by COMAC, Tsinghua University and Imperial College London, themed with "Intelligent Flight", and held from September 10th to 14th, 2018. Leaders, experts and scholars from Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), Ministry of Finance (MOF), State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), Chinese Academy of Engineering, Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), relevant departments of Beijing, colleges, universities, enterprises, financial institutions and other domestic and foreign partners as well as the hosts Tsinghua University, Imperial College London and COMAC gathered together to have in-depth dialogues on government, industry, education, research and integration and open a new chapter in talent exchange and science & technology cooperation between university and industry centering on the technology innovation in commercial aircraft industry with the aim of "exchanging ideas on basic science, exploring cutting-edge technologies, solving difficult problems, and promoting innovation cooperation".

Mr. Zhang Jianguo, Vice Minister of MOST and Director of State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA), Mr. He Dongfeng, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of COMAC, Mr. Wang Xiqin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Mr. Paul Robinson, Representative of President of Imperial College London, and Mr. Andrew Massey, Representative of British Embassy in China, made speeches at the opening ceremony. Mdm Maggie Dallman, Vice President of Imperial College London, made a speech by video. Mr. Zhang Bo, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Lin Jianguo and Mr. Guo Yike, Fellows of The Royal Academy of Engineering and Professors of Imperial College London, Mr. Zhao Yuerang, President of COMAC, Mr. Liu Linzong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of COMAC, and Mr. Cheng Fubo, Vice President of COMAC, attended the opening ceremony. Mr. Liu Linzong presided over the opening ceremony.

Mr. Zhang Jianguo expressed that the Chinese government had always attached great importance to scientific and technological innovation, and MOST would plan and promote scientific and technological innovation with a global perspective, strengthen international personnel exchanges in all areas, facilitate the implementation of the strategy of invigorating China by science and education, strengthening China by human resources and driving development by innovation, promote the exchange and mutual learning of various innovation achievements, and further stimulate market vitality and social creativity to promote high-quality development. He said that large commercial aircraft had been praised as the crown of modern industry and played an important role in promoting the development of economy, society, science, technology, basic disciplines and aviation industry. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening-up policy. Adhering to the concept of "discussion, co-construction and sharing", we would sincerely welcome experts and scholars from universities and research institutions around the world to cooperate in China, encourage and support Chinese enterprises and universities to participate more widely in international scientific and technological exchanges, and build a global scientific and technological innovation community.

Mr. He Dongfeng expressed that "COMAC International Science Technology and Innovation Week" was an international open platform for scientific and technological innovation initiated and emphasized by COMAC to gather wisdom, exchange ideas, have in-depth dialogues on government, industry, education, research and integration, and jointly promote the innovation and progress of commercial aircraft industry. The commercial aircraft market in China and around the world was promising. Young COMAC was open to dialogue with the world and was willing to inject the experience and exploration of global universities in basic research and forward-looking technologies into commercial aircraft industry to meet the needs of people with safer, more economical, environmentally friendly and convenient air travel.

Mr. Wang Xiqin expressed that Tsinghua University had been in close contact with COMAC for many years, and both sides had developed a lot of cooperation and exchanges in the development of scientific research and talent cultivation. Standing at a new historical starting point, Tsinghua University would further expand its cooperation with COMAC, build a bridge between basic research and product development, and make greater contributions to the large aircraft industry with more achievements in scientific research and more excellent aviation talents.

Mr. Paul Robinson expressed that COMAC International Science Technology and Innovation Week had provided a good opportunity for sharing support and establishing cooperation, and could further meet the market demand of the whole aviation technology field. He hoped that Imperial College London could further strengthen cooperation with COMAC, Tsinghua University and other parties, and catalyze the research and exploration of more projects in the future.

Mr. Andrew Massey expressed that, UK had paid close attention to the development of China's aviation industry for the past few years, and British companies had actively taken part in ARJ21 and C919 programs. He hoped that more cooperation on CR929 program and broader interaction between academia and research would be developed in the future.

Mr. Cheng Fubo, Mr. Lin Jianguo and Mr. Zhang Bo made keynote speeches themed with Development Status and Prospect of COMAC Aircraft Programs, Lightweight Alloy Materials and Their Applications in Aircraft Structures, and Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Flight respectively at the ceremony.

COMAC Innovation Forum was held in the afternoon of the same day. Six experts from different field, including Mr. Guo Yike, Mr. Qian Zhongyan, General Manager of Systems Engineering and Program Management Department of COMAC, Mr. Chen Jin, Professor of Economic Management of Tsinghua University, Mr. Lu Shan, Director of China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID), Mr. Liu Hui, Deputy Inspector of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and Mr. Wang Jian, Chairman of Technology Commission of Alibaba Group, made keynote speeches themed with Big Data Providing Service for Science, COMAC Systems Engineering Practice, Building World-Class Innovative R&D Organization, Thoughts on Improving Innovation Ability in Key and Core Technology, Improving Technological Innovation Capability of Leading Enterprises, Building Innovation Model of Science & Innovation Center, City Brain and Computing Academy of Engineering with Global Influence respectively to exchange innovation ideas and discuss innovation model from different perspectives, and make in-depth and vivid explanation of the development of commercial aircraft industry.

During the COMAC International Science Technology and Innovation Week, experts will also focus on the strategic demand for innovation of civil aircraft science and technology, combine the advantageous research fields and expert resources of colleges and universities, and conduct exchanges and discussions on lightweight structure, big data and artificial intelligence, industrial design, virtual simulation and test, automation, intelligent manufacturing, etc. C919 first flight crew will go to Tsinghua University to share the stories about the first flight of C919 with the teachers and students of the university. Experts from Imperial College London will also go to Tsinghua University to conduct cultural exchanges.
