2nd International Symposium on Composite Technology for Commercial Aircraft held in Shanghai

The 2nd International Symposium on Composite Technology for Commercial Aircraft, which was hosted by Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) and supported by Chinese Society for Composite Materials, was held in Shanghai on August 26th, 2017. Technical experts and specialists from more than ten well-known domestic and foreign research institutes and enterprises in the field of composite technology, molds and automation equipment gathered together and developed in-depth discussions and exchanges on advanced manufacturing technology and quality control methods of composite structures according to the characteristics of composite technology, i.e. the integration of "material-design-analysis-technology-test-manufacturing-equipment".

Mr. Shi Jianzhong, Vice President of COMAC, made a speech at the opening ceremony of the symposium. Mr. Shi Jianzhong expressed that using composite materials in large commercial aircraft is the inevitable demand and realistic trend of the strong development of world aviation, and the proportion of composite materials in structure has become one of the important symbols of the advancement of modern commercial aircraft. Composite technology itself is improving, and especially, composite material automatic manufacturing technology and low cost technology have made great developments. This international symposium on composite technology, which is held every two years, will draw on the wisdom of the masses, enhance the service capacity of composite material industry on the strategic demand of commercial aircraft, and develop composite material application technology of commercial aircraft through global strengths.

Mdm Jiang Liping, Chief Manufacturing Engineer of COMAC and Chief Engineer of Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (SAMC), relevant officers of Shanghai Aircraft Design and Research Institute (SADRI), and Mr. Liu Chuanjun, a distinguished expert in national "Recruitment Program of Global Experts" and Deputy Chief Designer of Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI), introduced the exploration and progress made by COMAC in automatic manufacturing technology of composite structures. Mr. Nicola Miani, Head of Product Engineering Department of Italy Leonardo Aerostructure Company, introduced the new trend of composite material application in wide-body aircraft. Mdm Angel Barrio, Head of Engineering Department of Spain Alestis Company, and Mr. Jose Martin, Head of Composite Research and Development Department of Spain Alestis Company, introduced the current technology and future development trend of manual and automatic layup of composite materials in their speeches themed with Advanced Composite Technology: A Part of Alestis' Strategy Towards the Future. Mr. Andrew Purvis, Mechanical Engineer and Program Manager of Electro Impact (EI), introduced the reliability and detectability of high-performance automatic laying equipment during application process. Mr. Carlos Eraso, Director of Spain Anueva Aviation Engineering Co., Ltd., had 27 years of experience working in composite material manufacturing. He introduced the manufacturing experience and lessons of Anueva in the past 30 years from the perspective of manufacturing in his speech themed with As a Leader in Composite Materials for 30 Years. Mr. Michel Princen, Head of Composite Commerce Department of Sonaca Group, introduced the smooth conversion of Sonaca Group from single prototype production to quick batch production and the improvement in production efficiency. Mr. Michael S. Maguire, CEO of Britain Standard Tooling Design Co., Ltd., introduced the mold forming status of common composite components and complex composite components in his speech themed with Development of Aviation Mold. Mr. Xiang Hai, Deputy Chief Metallurgical Engineer of Engineering Department of AVIC Chengdu Aircraft Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. (CAC), talked about the technical development of CAC during participation in the manufacturing of composite materials for commercial aircraft.

Attendees of the symposium also developed in-depth discussions on the issues of evaluation method of performance within the scope of composite technology parameters and selection of process deviation acceptance criteria; evaluation method of design manufacturability, component manufacturing defects and deviation acceptance criteria; weighting analysis of structural performance, manufacturability, production efficiency and production cost; airworthiness certification of liquid forming process; selection of forming process for H-shape structure; preforming of heat diaphragm or hot mold pressing, etc.
