A reporter of China Commercial Aircraft News visited Dachang final assembly base of Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (SAMC) of Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) on June 14th, 2017 when there was 14 days to go before the first anniversary of ARJ21's entering into route operation. "There are five ARJ21 aircraft gathering here. AC107 is being tested outside the gate of the final assembly shop, and AC108-111 are readying for final assembly." Mr. Guo Nianhui, Assistant Superintendent of the Final Assembly Shop of SAMC, told the reporter proudly, and said that assembling five aircraft simultaneously was an unprecedented grand occasion for SAMC and even the whole Shanghai since the final assembly of MD82 in 1980s and 1990s.

According to Mr. Guo Nianhui, the final assembly of the five aircraft is progressing in a tense and orderly manner, AC107 has entered the phase of functional test, AC108 and AC110 are in the phase of system parts assembly, AC109 will soon enter the phase of system parts assembly, and AC111 is in the phase of fuselage butt joint. In addition, AC112 is being assembled in the assembly shop and will soon enter the phase of final assembly. "At that time, there will be six aircraft gather together for final assembly." Mr. Guo Nianhui joked.

Up to now, two ARJ21 aircraft have been delivered to the first customer Chengdu Airlines, put into route operation to fly to and fro between Chengdu and Shanghai, and accumulatively carried more than 10,000 passengers. However, it is still a serious test for SAMC to go through the phase of batch production. For this reason, SAMC has adjusted the management mechanism and established a C919 division and an ARJ21 division respectively. Under the ARJ21 division, there is a general foreman and position foremen, and each position foreman leads two to four teams, so that personnel and resources can be allocated in the most accurate way.

"For example, in some tests, irrelevant personnel should not board the aircraft, and therefore some jobs have to be suspended. We can schedule such test in the evenings when the aircraft is free, so the progress will not be delayed." Mr. Guo Nianhui said, "After the general foreman is assigned, the speed of resource and personnel allocation is obviously accelerated. Previously, when the final assembly shop needed the support of the assembly shop, coordination between the two shops was usually necessary, but now it can be resolved by the general foreman himself, so the coordination speed is accelerated." In addition to the management system improvement, SAMC has also made innovations in the work plan arrangement to focus on the potential of each individual and improve overall manufacturing efficiency.

"I believe that in the near future, the five ARJ21 aircraft will be able to gather at Chengdu." said Mr. Guo Nianhui confidently.
